Fighter Verse 24: 2
Timothy 1:7
[For] God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.
BIG IDEA: When I am afraid, I can ask Jesus for courage and to help me not be afraid.
SIMPLE PHRASE: Because of God, be courageous.
1. Prayer
Prayer focused on Philippians 4:11 – 13, last
week’s verse.
Here is a sample prayer.
God, thank you for who you are and what you have done for us. Help me learn what it means to be content and joyful because of Jesus and not because of what is happening in my life. Help me find my strength in you. Amen.
2.
Last Week’s Fighter Verse Review
Together say last week’s Fighter Verses
I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. ¹²I know how to be brought low, and I
know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of
facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. ¹³I can do all things through him
who strengthens me
Encourage people to say the passage or part of
the passage.
· Use the
poster verse
· Say part of the verse together
3. Follow-up from last week’s study and action
Ask what they did to live out Phil. 4:11-13
· Talk to others
or your parents about what it means to be content/joyful in the Lord.
· Count
your blessings this week
· Don't
complain
· Do a blessing
notebook this week (write or draw a picture of God's blessings). You
could even have the kids draw one in class and then commit to doing one each
day. Next week they can share some of the things they wrote or drew.
· Did they think of a song to sing every time they are about to complain? Doesn't necessarily need to be about complaining. Should be about how AWESOME God is.
4. Introduction
Coloring Page
"The Special Arrow" (see adaptation
for younger kids)
Write the word FEAR on a blown-up
balloon.
Share a picture of and
information about bows and arrows. Then show
your arrow.
With the balloon in one
hand and the arrow in the other puncture the balloon.
Adaptation for younger kids:
Write the word FEAR on a bottle of bubbles.
Show the kids the bottle and tell them what it
says.
Blow bubbles and let the kids pop them.
(No need to make an application at this time)
However, for younger kids with the bubbles, you can tell them to get rid of all the bubbles/fear.
"What's on the menu?"
Describe scurvy – (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scurvy)
Here are some of the symptoms from Wikipedia: weakness, feeling tired, and sore arms and
legs. As it gets worse there is gum disease, changes to hair, bleeding from
the skin may occur, and personality changes.
It can result in death.
Let them know that every single person probably has food in
their house that prevents scurvy.
Vitamin C is needed to prevent scurvy.
Food like oranges prevents this sickness.
Sailors used to get sick with scurvy because they didn’t know
they needed Vitamin C to be healthy. The cure had already been given, but the sailors
needed to find it and eat the right foods.
According to 2 Timothy 1:7,
“God gave us” means that, if we are Christians, whatever He has given us,
we already have. We may not know about, understand,
or even make use of what God has given us.
But by studying God’s word, the Holy Spirit will help us learn and live.
“Superhero Origin Story”
In EVERY superhero story, the hero does great
things with his/her superpower. This power
has a source.
· Spiderman was bitten by a radioactive spider
· Superman was born on a different planet and our sun gives him power
· Wonder
Woman was given powers by a Greek god, who isn’t a real god.
· Ironman has an amazing suit and millions of dollars
In the Bible and in the Christian life we need to
remember that WE ARE NOT THE HERO OF THE STORY!
GOD IS! The Jesus Storybook Bible
introduction does a great job explaining this.
JESUS IS THE HERO OF THE STORY AND OUR LIVES.
And this week’s verse tells that because of and
through Jesus Christ, God has given us not only POWER but also LOVE and SELF-CONTROL.
If you do this activity, you might want to
connect it with
“Look in the Mirror Again” – Last week’s
Missionary story revisited.
How did this person show a life of power, love,
and self-control AND not fear?
Scary Stories
· Share a
time when you were scared.
· Ask a
couple of people to share about a time when they were scared.
· Share
some pictures of scary-looking animals.
5. What? (Observations – What are the facts? (from verse and immediate context)
Share Background on Timothy from the Discussion
Guide, www.preceptaustin.org, or
other resources
Timothy was a young man Paul discipled and
trained. Paul refers to him as his “son.” Timothy joined Paul right before they went to
Philippi.
Timothy’s mother and grandmother (2 Timothy 1:5)
were Christians who shared Jesus with Timothy.
Share Background based on the context of 2
Timothy.
Just like Philippians, this is a letter Paul writes
from prison to Timothy shortly before Paul’s death.
In this letter and this verse, Paul wants to
encourage his young friend, who was a pastor of a church, to live for God no
matter what.
Look at and talk about the contrast in this
verse.
Fear is contrasted with power, love, and
self-control.
Fear and power – fear cripples you and keeps you
from doing what you should do.
Fear and love – fear causes you to defend
yourself and look out for yourself.
Fear and self-control – fears control you and motivates
your decisions.
Share Keywords
· Fear
· Self-control (discipline) - Talk about the fact Biblical self-control is actually being controlled by the Spirit.

So What? (Interpretation – what is the meaning?) More questions in the
discussion guide.

introductory activity.
You can make additional comments on the
activities you did.
Verse-by-Verse
Fear
·
What are synonyms of "fear"?
·
What are people afraid of?
·
How is our thinking, feeling, and deciding different
now if we are Christians?
Power
· Remembering
last week’s verses what does power not mean and mean?
·
What are some of the things God calls Christians
to do now that they have His power to do? (obey His word, tell others about Him, stand
up for the truth)
Love
·
What are some examples of the things people say
using the word “love”? (I love your outfit;
I love this food; I love summer)
· How is this
different than the love in this verse”?
·
What are some examples of God’s love?
Self-control
· Biblical
self-control is not “I am the boss and I am in control.” An obvious question: Why is this not the case? (Obvious answer: God is in control)
· Biblical
self-control is your self (your actions, attitudes) is under control.
· For kids:
o
Self-control is not I want what I want and I am going to get it.
o
Self-control is I want to please God and do what He wants me to
do.
7. Now What? (Application – What is God’s intended effect?)
The Bible contains many
reminders about not being fearful.
· Psalm
23:4; Psalm 27:1; Psalm 56:9- 11; Joshua 1:9; Matthew 6:34
What are different ways
fear shows itself? (Some examples: anger and worry)
If someone was fearful, how would you counsel
them?
When is fear good? (example: a dangerous situation you should avoid)
When is fear bad? (When it causes you to sin)
For kids
How do you act when you are fearful?
An active way to do this is to put a line on the
floor (a string or something else)
One side is fearful the other side is powerful, loving, self-controlled, and
courageous.
Have the kids jump from one side to the other.
On each side what fear or power, love, and self-control (scary face, powerful muscles, hug)
8. Insight
What are some things you learned or were
reminded of in today’s lesson?
9. Action Steps
Think of some specific things each child could
do to live out the truths learned. You can think about activities for the
Now What? question.
For kids
·
Continue
doing the blessing notebook from last week and remember everything God gives us
ESPECIALLY power, love, and self-control.
o
Look
for an example of God’s power, love, and self-control in your life this week.
·
Read
through different “do not fear” verses each day.
10.
Prayer
God, thank you for giving us
Power over sin and death
Love that is so great that it should cause us to
love others even those who are hard to love
Self-control that shows we are trusting in you
and we want others to trust in you.
